A very worthwhile morning at the “Making AI Useful for Small Businesses” workshop, organised by Zoom, Barclays and UK Government Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.

Held at Zoom Executive Briefing Centre, Holborn, Central London

A few key messages stood out:

  • Start with a problem, not a tool.
    • Begin with tasks that arerepetitive, routine and low risk.
    • Test AI on a small scale and measure whether it genuinely improves the service.
    • Give AI the right context, but continue to check important information and sources.
    • Automate certainty, but humanise uncertainty — judgement, experience and relationships still matter.

It was also a pleasure to meet Steve Garcia, UK Government Head of Digital Skills Roadshow, Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.

My main takeaway: the most useful question is not simply “What can AI do?” but “Where can AI genuinely improve what we do, while preserving the human expertise that matters?”
